The Albert Louis Cotton Album was acquired by the Trust in May 2005. The acquisition was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the McManus Family to whom the album had descended by inheritance from its original owner, and the Küpper Family. The album contains the bookplate of Albert
Louis Cotton (1874-1930). He was the son of Lady Mary Cotton (neé Ryan)
and it is believed that he was given the album by his mother, who received
it from Julia Margaret Cameron herself. He died childless and the album
then passed to Juliana Hill (neé Cotton), the oldest daughter of his brother
Julian Cotton (1869-1927). Juliana, who was Margaret McManus’s mother,
died in 1988 whereupon the album passed into the hands of the McManus Family.
Mrs Thirza Küpper is the sister of Margaret McManus.

THE INSCRIPTIONS
The inscriptions written in black ink, usually in the top right hand corner of each page, were penned by Albert Louis Cotton. Research shows that some of these inscriptions are incorrect, both in their identification of the model concerned and in the spelling of the model’s name. The inscriptions below the images on most pages were written by Julia Margaret Cameron as she prepared the album for Mary Cotton (neé Ryan) one of her favourite sitters. |
