The 'Local Heritage Exhibition' Prints

The Julia Margaret Cameron Trust was delighted to receive a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative Fund to run a series of free photographic workshops during 2005. The aim of the project was to enable local people to become more aware of the heritage which surrounds them. The free workshops were aimed at all sections of the community who were able to get help and advice to produce images which could then be entered into a competition to choose the 20 ‘best’ images for display at Dimbola Lodge Museum in August 2005. We were looking for images that best illustrated the heritage of the Island within the AONB designated areas. We were very fortunate to have world renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite pop over to the Island to judge the competition. We had over 50 entries from across the Island. It became very difficult to whittle down the entries for the adults section to the last 10 as the quality was superb, but there was no doubt amongst the judges that the winner in the adults section was by Steve Smith. His photograph ‘Newtown’ encapsulates the beauty of the Island.

The Young Person’s winner was by Bryony Bishop aged 15 years, whose photographs of a field of poppies caught the judges’ eye. The Best Beginner category was won by David Lewis, his photograph of Compton Bay focused on a rusting hulk of metal, and the colours are wonderful and rich.

The 20 images reproduced here reflect the local Heritage of the Isle Wight during August and September 0f 2005 and are a lasting reminder of the beauty that surrounds us.
